In recognition of National Stroke Awareness Month, Astrazeneca will launch a web site aimed at educating the public about the risk of stroke associated with Atrial Fibrillation also called A.F. Each year, about seven-hundred-thousand people experience new or recurrent stroke. Patients with Atrial Fibrillation, or A-F, a type of irregular heart beat, are five times more likely to suffer a stroke than those without A-F A new survey shows that more than 80 percent of one thousand people polled were not aware that A-F is a major risk factor for stroke. A new educational resource has been developed to help raise awareness of this condition and medications that may help decrease the risk of strokes associated with A-F. Doctor Jodie Hurwitz, Medical City Dallas Hospital:
"Knowledge is key talk to your doctor and visit a-f advisor dot org. This web site was developed by a team of medical experts and a patient advocate from six leading institutions and Astrazeneca to provide information on A-F and its link to stroke. Many A-F related-strokes may be prevented through treatment with anticoagulants, but you have to be diagnosed with A-F by your doctor to see if the treatment is right for you."
The site provides patients with information on A-F symptoms, causes, risks, and current treatments.
